#4 MD Meetings- Primary Care

#19 NYSAFP Joint Chiropractic Meeting

Yesterday I was invited to speak in front of the Research Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in the Family Practice Department.  The focus was on the current research showing how Opioid medication is creating an epidemic of narcotics use and abuse, chiropractic’s effectiveness in the care of spine patients and how we are different from the medical model.   The audience was research fellows, research directors, and family practice MDs.

After the presentation, about 40 minutes a long and interesting discussion ensured between myself, the research director and the family practice MDs.   They were VERY interested in bringing chiropractic into the research fold, particularly from a primary care research standpoint.   This is a position that chiropractic has NEVER been brought into EVER.  The State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is a major part of the expansion of healthcare and bioinformatics in New York State.   Chiropractic is now positioned to stand on the shoulders of a large research center whose focus is on primary care/family practice, they know how to design studies and how to get the dollars to do it.  I have recently been accepted as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences at the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic, and it is by connecting these two organizations that we will do the most for chiropractic.

The focus is to provide chiropractic with the tools to succeed and thrive in the Evidence Based environment.   The major body overseeing this type of research is PCORI, which stands for the Patient Centered Outcome Research Institute.   Their mission statement is as follows:

Mission and VisionThe Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) helps people make informed health care decisions, and improves health care delivery and outcomes, by producing and promoting high integrity, evidence-based information that comes from research guided by patients, caregivers and the broader health care community.

Vision

Patients and the public have the information they need to make decisions that reflect their desired health outcomes.

There will be more on this topic in the coming months as we create stronger relationships and duplicate this process across the nation.

SOOOOOO…HOW DOES THIS HELP YOU?

At the end of the presentation, we had a discussion that lasted for another 30 minutes resulting in me being invited to do a JOINT meeting between New York State chiropractors in the Western New York area and the New York State Academy of Family Physicians.  This will be the FIRST TIME organized medicine and organized chiropractic are meeting SPECIFICALLY to address patient care TOGETHER.

As I work with this concept across New York State, I will be working with each of you to DUPLICATE what I am doing.  I have MD contacts what will provide testimonials and with my help we can create a common working platform between medicine and chiropractic.  This will mean THOUSANDS of patients for your office and will be backed by research that supports chiropractic care.  You don’t have to CHANGE who you are or what you are doing for this to work, it is all about using the research that  I give you and reaching out to MDs in your area.

More to follow….
